PAN CARD

Permanent Account Number (PAN) refers to a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a laminated card, by the Income Tax Department in India. It is a must to have a PANnumber for all those who file their income tax returns, because from 2005 onwards, it has been made mandatory by the Income Tax Department to quote the PAN on return of income as well as on all correspondence with any income tax authority in the country.

Also, it is now compulsory to quote PAN in all documents pertaining to financial transactions notified from time to time by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, such as sale and purchase of immovable property or motor vehicle or payments in cash, of amounts exceeding a certain limit to hotels and restaurants, or in connection with travel to any foreign country. Likewise, PAN has to be mentioned for making a time deposit exceeding Rs. 50,000/- with a Bank or Post Office or for depositing cash of Rs. 50,000/- or more in a Bank.

PAN enables the department to link all financial transactions, such as tax payments, TDS or TCS credits, returns of income/wealth/gift/FBT, specified transactions, correspondence, etc, of the person with the Income Tax department. The primary objective of PAN is to use a universal identification key to track financial transactions to prevent tax evasion.

It is PERMANENT for your life and will not change with change of your address or marital status. It needs to be surrendered after death of the person.

One can have only one PAN. A penalty of Rs. 10,000 is liable to be imposed under section 272B of the Income-tax Act, 1961 for having more than one PAN. If a person has been allotted more than one PAN then he should immediately surrender the additional PAN card(s).

How to apply for a PAN?

The Income Tax Department has ensured that applying for a PAN is a simple and convenient procedure. All you need to do is submit the requisite Application Form No. 49A. The PAN application can also be downloaded from the website of UTI Investor Services Ltd (the authorised agency to manage IT PAN service Centres in various cities) The form is also available at IT PAN Service Centres and TIN Facilitation Centres. Individuals not being a citizen of India can use the Form No. 49AA for applying a new PAN card.

You will need a recent colour photograph (stamp size: 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm) to attach on the form. You must mention the designation and code of the concerned Assessing Officer of the Income Tax department in Form 49A. You can get this from the IT PAN Service Centre mentioned in the websites listed above. Also, the application shall have to be accompanied by a proof of identity as well as a proof of residence. The filled application form has to be submitted at your nearest IT PAN Service Centre or TIN Facilitation Centre along with the requisite fee. Apply for Pan Card Online

  1. If you are planning to apply for a new PAN card, here’s a simple step-by-step process that you can follow:

  2. For starters, you need to visit the official NSDL website https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/newpan.html and download form 49A.

  3. Once this is done, fill in the details on the form and submit the application online. After the application has been submitted successfully, a 15-digit unique acknowledgment number will be displayed.

  4. Keep the acknowledgement number safely as you will need to send this number to the Income Tax department.

  5. In addition to this, you need to fill an acknowledgement form, attach recent photographs to it and sign it.

  6. This acknowledgement form along with the other documents should be sent to the NSDL office in Pune within 15 days of the online application date.

  7. When you send the acknowledgement form to the IT department, you need to attach a proof of address and identity proof and the payment receipt.

  8. In order to receive your new PAN card you need to pay a processing fee of Rs. 107 if the card is to be sent to an address within India. You can make the payment through—online net banking, cheque, demand draft, or debit card.For addresses outside India, applicants need to pay an amount of Rs. 989 through the same payment channels.

  9. When you send the acknowledgement form to the IT department, you need to attach a proof of address and identity proof and the payment receipt.

  10. You need to mention the words, ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN—ACKNOWLEDGEMENT NUMBER’ on the envelope and mail it with the required documents inside.

Apply for Pan Card Offline

Form 49AA : This form is also used for application of New PAN Card but this form can be used by NRIs, entities incorporated outside India and unincorporated entities formed outside India.

The charges for applying for PAN online is Rs.105 (including service tax) for Indian communication address and Rs.971 (including service tax) for foreign communication address. Payment of application fee can be made through credit/debit card or net-banking.

Individual applicants should affix two recent colour photographs with white background (size 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm) in the space provided on the form. The photographs should not be stapled or clipped to the form. The clarity of image on PAN card will depend on the quality and clarity of photograph affixed on the form.

AO code (Area Code, AO Type, Range Code and AO Number)of the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer must be filled up by the applicant. You can obtain it from https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/Services/KnowYourJurisdictionLink.html

Applicant will receive 15 digit acknowledgement containing a unique number on acceptance of this form. This acknowledgement number can be used for tracking the status of the application

It generally takes a week for getting the Permanent Account Number and round about 15-20 days for getting the physical card, which is delivered through Post at the mentioned address.

Duplicate PAN application In case you lose your existing PAN card or wish to make any changes (address change, surname change, date of birth change) the process is similar to that of applying for a new card. You will need to select the option, ‘Changes or Correction in PAN details’ and fill the online application form. You then follow the same process of sending the form to the NSDL office as you would if you were applying for a new PAN card.

PAN card tracking Once you have sent the PAN card to the Pune office, you can track your application by sending an SMS to 57575. You need to type NSDLPAN [space] Your 15-digit Acknowledgement Number and you will get the status of your PAN card application.

Reprint of PAN card This application should be used when PAN has already been allotted to the applicant but applicant requires a PAN card. A new PAN card bearing the same PAN is issued to applicant.

While filling this form, applicant should not select any of the check boxes on the left margin of the form. However, the check box for Item no. 7. Address for communication will be selected by default as this address will be updated in the records of ITD.

Changes or Correction in PAN details This application should be used when PAN has already been allotted to the applicant, but when data associated with the PAN (e.g. name of applicant / father’s name / date of birth / address) is required to be updated in records of ITD. A new PAN card bearing the same PAN but updated information is issued to applicant.

While filling this form, applicant should select the relevant check box on the left margin of the form. The check box for Item no. 7. Address for communication will be selected by default as this address will be updated in the records of ITD.

It is required that any change in the information provided to ITD at the time of making application for allotment of PAN, should be intimated to ITD by way of filing this form. Status Track for PAN application You can track the status of your application for new PAN / reprint of PAN card / Changes or Correction in PAN details using the 15 digit unique Acknowledgment Number after three days of application using this facility.

Contact PAN Card Customer Care In case of any query, you can call any PAN Center or NSDL and UTI PAN facility centers. Also make sure that you call the relevant nodal with which you have applied for PAN Card. Get contact numbers of nearest NSDL and UTI PAN Card offices and call them for any query related to your application.

PAN for minor

  1. If minor is earning income applying his skill then his income will not be clubbed with that of parent and he would have to file income tax return and thus have a PAN card.

  4. Minor’s PAN is similar to that of adult with slight variations given below

  5. Process of applying for PAN of Minor is same as that of the adult.

  6. PAN Card issued to Minor does not have the Minor’s photo or signature. Hence when minor becomes adult PAN Card needs to be updated.

  7. To update PAN for minor one has to apply for correction in data of PAN Card and furnish photo and update his signature with the income tax authorities. The procedure for the same is to apply for it on a PAN request form.

PAN for NRI

  1. PAN Card is required by an NRI If he has got a taxable income in India.

  2. Any NRI cannot do the share trading by depository or broker if he does not have PAN.

  4. To purchase some land or other property in India then also it is mandatory to have PAN card issued by Government of India

  5. Process of Applying for PAN for NRI is similar to Individual with NRI required to fill Form 49AA

On Losing PAN Card If one loses the PAN Card, The first and foremost thing you need to is, lodge the complaint to nearest police station and take the acknowledgement/complaint copy. It ensures that your PAN Card should not get misused, though you can get duplicate PAN Card without FIR .Then you need to apply for duplicate PAN card. A new PAN card bearing the same PAN number will be issued to the applicant. The applicant may also choose to make corrections if any. Surrendering of PAN after death When a person passes away and has PAN card, the PAN card needs to be surrendered. Process for surrendering PAN is to Submit death certificate along with letter for surrender of PAN Card to the last jurisdictional Income tax Officer where one has been assessed by the kin of the deceased. The letter must contain details such as your name, contact details, details of the PAN card to be retained, details of the duplicate PAN card(s) which you need to surrender, etc.
